Ambrosia

Mass of Christian Burial for Ambrosia “Amy” Sporer, 87, of Ipswich is 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Ipswich. Closed casket visitation, as Amy wished, will be one hour prior to the service at the church.

Amy was born February 15, 1925 to William and Katherine (Wentz) Mastel in Fountain Township, Edmunds County, South Dakota. She was raised on the family farm. Amy didn’t speak English until learning the language when she went to school at the age of six. She went on to graduate from Ipswich High School and then achieved a Teacher’s Certificate from Northern State College in Aberdeen.

She married Philip Sporer on August 16, 1945. They made their home on the Sporer farm 12 miles southeast of Ipswich. There she raised her family and also worked as a file clerk for the South Dakota Department of Labor. She also found time to garden and especially loved raising flowers. Amy was a very creative person who enjoyed sharing her baking talents. She found great joy in raising her many pets and found peace in a good book as an avid reader.

Amy was also very active in her church home, Holy Cross Catholic Church, where she was a part of the Altar Society and St. Gerard’s Study Club. She also gave of her time as a member of the American Legion Auxiliary-Gold Star Sister and assisted with local blood drives.

Amy died Friday, May 18, 2012 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Philip, of Ipswich; five children, Bonnie (Ron) Boyer of Ft. Worth, TX, Betty (Bernard) Benton of Joppa, MD, Jim Sporer of Ipswich, Debbie (Duane) Clemens of Aberdeen, and Bill (Bonita) Sporer of Lansing, MI; five grandchildren, Jeffrey Boyer, Brandon Majerus, Natalie Majerus Gainey, Neil Clemens and Lee Clemens; six great-grandchildren; four sisters, Rose Jasper of St. Paul, MN, Dolly Dodd of Alta, IA, Frances Geier of Longview, WA, and Dorothy (Roger) Portz of Casper, WY as well as many nieces and nephews.

Her parents; two sisters, Mary and Katherine; five brothers, Joseph, George, Walter, Leonard and Lawrence preceded her in death.
